Restored by the Medici family, Sant’Antimo Abbey is nestled in the picturesque Tuscan countryside, a short distance from Florence. At its heart stands the Church of San Paolo, commissioned in 1470 by Lorenzo de’ Medici, who dreamt of building a bridge between this world and the next. Taking over a decade to complete and incurring significant costs, the church is a testament to the wealth and influence of the Medici dynasty. While the exterior retains the style of the original structure, the interior exudes an opulence that contrasts starkly with the abbey’s austere surroundings.

With the founding of the Medici Bank in 1397, the family rapidly rose to be the wealthiest and most influential in Europe. The abbey and church were merely two among the numerous architectural projects they sponsored. The church boasts concealed chambers accessed through a complex system of codes—a favoured technique among the Renaissance elite. The Medici hid countless treasures within these hallowed walls; even today, some of their grandest secrets remain unearthed.
